Enjoy our new <span data-text-color=\"alert\">Social Enterprise Success Stories<\/span> series, which continues with a pioneer for basic healthcare to isolated communities: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-text-color=\"primary\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyentrepreneurs.nl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HEALTHY ENTREPRENEURS<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: \u00a9Healthy Entrepreneurs \/ This series is supported by the Kompetenzzentrum f\u00fcr Soziale Innovationen Deutschland, co-financed by the European Union.<br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"is-divider divider clearfix\" style=\"max-width:772px;\"><\/div>\n<h3><span data-text-color=\"primary\">Healthy Entrepreneurs: Providing<\/span> <span data-text-color=\"primary\">basic healthcare where no one else will go<br \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-text-color=\"primary\">The social problem:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u25aaIn large parts of the world, people living in rural communities often lack trusted information on health-promoting practices and <span data-text-color=\"alert\">cannot access affordable health products and services<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa<span data-text-color=\"alert\">Poor knowledge of causes and symptoms<\/span> lead to avoidable infectious diseases such as Zika, Mers, and Ebola, and to low adherence to treatment of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes<span data-text-color=\"alert\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u25aaThere is a <span data-text-color=\"alert\">low availability of health centers<\/span> and high travel costs to get to the nearest ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u25aaThe <span data-text-color=\"alert\">high dependency on the local black market for medicines<\/span> causes the use of cheaper but counterfeit medicines (30-60% of all available medication).<\/p>\n<p><span data-text-color=\"primary\">The solution:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u25aaHealthy Entrepreneurs offers a franchise model for basic health services: The social enterprise identifies qualified health workers (&#8220;Community Health Entrepreneurs&#8221;, CHE), <span data-text-color=\"alert\">enables them to become micro-entrepreneurs<\/span>, gives training, start-up credit, and equipment, while managing the full supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u25aaAmong other benefits, the solution has proven to double the CHE\u2019s income and <span data-text-color=\"alert\">lead to 55% in cost savings in health expenditure for rural families<\/span>. It contributes to essential employment in rural and remote areas, especially for female entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p><span data-text-color=\"primary\">Proof of Concept:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u25aaHealthy Entrepreneurs is working today with <span data-text-color=\"alert\">more than 18,000 micro-entrepreneurs in 7 countries<\/span>, reaching around 18 million people in rural areas across Africa.<\/p>\n<p><span data-text-color=\"primary\">Scaling:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u25aaTo scale operations in Kenia and Uganda, the social enterprise was looking for growth capital in 2019\/2020 and successfully secured a <span data-text-color=\"alert\">hybrid financing round<\/span> with support from FASE in 2020.
