On the way to becoming Europe’s first MDR-certified AI Therapist

Societal Challenge

17.8 million people in Germany live with a mental illness (DGPPN 2025). At the same time, therapy and companionship have become the most cited use case of generative AI (Harvard Business Review 2026). Millions of people are therefore already having therapeutic conversations with systems that were neither built nor clinically tested for this purpose.

Solution

Aury is on its way to becoming the the first clinically tested AI therapist in Europe for evidence-based mental healthcare. The dialogue-based platform combines therapeutic quality with access through statutory health insurance, opening up a structurally underserved market: over 1 billion people worldwide without access to psychological support. With its prevention course “Digitale Stressbewältigung mit Aury”, Aury has already launched its first product. The course is ZPP-certified and therefore reimbursable through statutory health insurers. It demonstrates the market readiness of the platform technology. In parallel, Aury is advancing toward becoming the first medical-device (MDR) certified AI therapist in Europe.

The Team Behind Aury

The founding team around CEO Max Rank, Chief Clinical Officer Saskia Fester and CTO Robert Wasenmüller combines clinical psychology, AI development and healthtech experience, with scientific input from experts in clinical psychology and AI research. Together, they took Germany’s first LLM-based prevention course through ZPP certification. Their goal is to bring psychological support to where people already seek it, in conversation, and anchor it there in a clinically grounded, regulated form.
